Philips CDI 310 General Maintenance

From RetroTechCollection

No service manual for the Philips CDI 310 has been found, and the only published teardown is retrostuff's documentation of a pre-production EMC test unit.[1] The 310 is built on the main board of the Philips CDI 350, so the 350's service manual covers the main board, the CD mechanism, the service position and the Timekeeper; those steps are on the Philips CDI 350 General Maintenance page.[2] The notes below cover the parts that are unique to the 310: the closed top, the floppy controller board and the floppy drive.

Before you start

[edit | edit source]
  • Back up anything on the NVRAM you want to keep; the player has 8 KB of battery-backed NVRAM like the 350.[3]
  • retrostuff's 310 had leaking SMD electrolytics on both boards and he limited power-on time to avoid further damage. Power a 310 that has not been recapped for as short a time as possible.[1]
  • The CD mechanism is a CDM-9; follow the 350 manual's static precautions when unplugging its flex foil.[1][4]

Top assembly

[edit | edit source]

On retrostuff's unit, the expansion socket cover at the rear has to be opened before the top cover can be removed. The top assembly, which carries the floppy controller board and the drive, attaches to the main chassis where the 350's screen hinge would be and is otherwise held only by the extension socket cover at the rear.[1] A production 310 has its own top cover with the full labelling; check how yours is fixed before prying.[1]

Floppy controller board PD06

[edit | edit source]

The controller board sits in the top assembly. Its connections, as found on retrostuff's unit:[1]

PD06 connectors
Connector Goes to
JL01 to JL04 Four flat cables to the main board's extension socket J606, through a small board with edge connectors
JL05 Feed-through extension socket for the 22ER9142 Digital Video dock
JL06 25-way flat cable to main board connector J402 (the screen connector on the 350)
JL07 26-way flat cable to the floppy drive

On the EMC unit the four extension-socket cables were taped to the socket with copper tape and had to be prised free; on that unit J402 also supplied +12 V to the controller board from the main board's +12B rail, which drives the LCD backlight on the 350.[1][2] The board's main parts are listed on the main page. No schematic for it has been published.[1]

Floppy disk drive

[edit | edit source]

The drive is a slim Mitsumi F359F2.[1] General cleaning and repair of floppy drives is covered on the Floppy Drive Repair page.

Main board

The PM06 main board as drawn in the CDI 350 service manual; the 310 uses the same board with some sections left out

On the main board, the CD mechanism and the power connection panel PP06 are the same as the 350's, and the speakers are absent.[1] A production 310 board leaves out the LCD supply, screen interface, display control and speaker amplifier parts that the 350 has.[2] Take the board out as on the 350, and replace the Timekeeper as described there.[2]
