Philips CDI 450 Capacitor Replacement Guide

The Philips CDI 450 has 29 aluminium electrolytic capacitors: 22 on the main panel and seven in the external 20PS301 power supply. Philips's parts lists give the value and voltage of each; 22 of them also have a Philips code number, all in the 4822 124 series.[1][2] The main panel's component-side index gives the grid square of each one.[3] For failure signs in general see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

Before replacing anything

[edit | edit source]

Most CDI 450 faults that retrostuff reports are in the NVRAM timekeeper, the CD mechanism and the power supply plug, so rule those out first.[4][5][6] Measure the +5 V supply at the key ICs as set out on the troubleshooting guide.[7]

Mains voltage is present only inside the 20PS301 supply. Its primary reservoir 2103 is a 100 µF 400 V part; unplug the supply and let it discharge before opening it, and check 2103 with a meter.[2][6]

2204 100 µF 35 V - With the rectifier 6204 (BYV10-40) on winding pin 16
2205 1000 µF 10 V - Between the 0 V line and the negative supply that feeds the -5 V regulator 7202 through 3209 and 3210
2206 100 µF 35 V - -5 V output of the regulator 7202 (MC79M05CT)

[2][8]

A dash in the code column means the parts list gives the value without a code number. All seven are 20 % tolerance parts.[8]

The other capacitors in the supply are film or ceramic: 2101 (330 nF 250 V) across the mains input, 2113 and 2114 (2.2 nF 400 V), 2105 to 2108 and 2110 (220 nF 63 V, and 22 nF 250 V for 2108), 2109 (1.5 nF), 2111 (2.2 nF), 2202 (100 nF) and 2207 (15 nF).[8] 2101, 2113 and 2114 carry the warning triangle that marks safety components on the circuit diagram, and Philips requires identical parts in those positions.[2][9]

In total: one 1000 µF 6.3 V, one 330 µF 16 V, two 100 µF 16 V, seven 100 µF 10 V, four 47 µF 25 V, six 47 µF 6.3 V and one 2.2 µF 63 V.[1] 2272 and 2337 have no code number in the parts list.[1] The grid squares refer to the drawing of the main panel's component side, columns 1 to 6 and rows A to D.[3]

The remaining main panel capacitors are ceramic parts (mostly 22 nF 63 V), with 470 nF 25 V parts at 2206, 2454, 2524 and 2526, all with 4822 122, 4822 126 or 5322 122 codes.[1]

The parts list does not give a capacitor's case size. Photograph or measure each part before ordering, and check the height of any part under the metal shield.

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the power supply from the player.
  2. Open the player and lift out the main panel, using the exploded view on the maintenance page. Photograph every connector and cable run first.[10]
  3. Work with the ESD precautions Philips gives: an antistatic mat with a wrist lead, and an iron at the same potential as the board.[9]
  4. Note the polarity of each capacitor before removing it. On a Philips CDI 350 recap, retrostuff fitted two electrolytics the wrong way round by following the + marks on the board instead of the white dots.[11]
  5. Fit parts of the same capacitance and at least the same voltage rating.
  6. For the power supply, remove the one-way screws under the rubber feet (retrostuff drilled two small holes in each so that a spanner screwdriver would turn them), discharge 2103, and replace the electrolytics. Keep the safety-marked parts 2101, 2113 and 2114 to Philips's specification.[6][9]
  7. Reassemble, reconnect and run the checks below.
