Philips Odyssey 2100 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Two Philips documents for the Philips Odyssey 2100 (type G7513) are hosted on the wiki: the service manual CS43618 and the instruction leaflet. Both come from the Internet Archive item MagnavoxOdyssey.[1]

Service manual CS43618

[edit | edit source]

The Service Manual Odyssey 2100 is Philips's 3-page service manual for the type G7513. The front page carries the code CS43618, the Philips 12NC 4822 727 13061 and the note "Printed in The Netherlands"; the schematic sheet on page 3 is numbered CS43619.[2][3] The scan is credited to Wil Manshande of www.freeservicemanuals.info, and every page carries that site's stamp. The hosted copy was rebuilt from the archive.org file's own page images to remove its copy protection; the pages are unchanged.[1]

Contents

[edit | edit source]
Service manual CS43618 contents
Page Contents
1 Drawing of the console with the four controls numbered and named in ten languages (game select; left player and single-play switch; reset and bat size; right player and single player); service adjustments in English and Dutch
2 The same service adjustments in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish
3 Sheet CS43619: the G7513 schematic (drawing 13978E2) with DC voltages at the IC pins; the printed circuit board layout; a short parts list with Philips 12NC numbers

[2][3]

The three adjustments are the channel E3 and E4 oscillators (coils S3 and S2), the 5.5 MHz sound oscillator (S1, measured at IC1 point 5) and the 4.43 MHz colour oscillator (trimmer C13, set to 4.433618 MHz at IC3 pin 17).[2]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No troubleshooting chart, no disassembly instructions and no specifications table.[2]
  • No full parts list. Page 3 lists only C1, C2, C5, C13, the two controller potentiometers, the adaptor U1, the crystal KT1, the four ICs, TS1, the socket BU1, the plug PL1 and the 24-pin IC socket. Resistor and small capacitor values are read from the schematic.[3]
  • No circuit of the adaptor beyond a block showing a mains transformer and a bridge rectifier, and no adaptor rating other than the 24 V marked at the console's input.[3]
  • No description of what is inside the MM57186, MM53114 or LM1889 beyond the block names on the schematic.[3]

In the parts list the numbers for TS1, BU1, PL1 and the IC socket are crossed out and replacement numbers are printed beside them; the number for TS1 is the same in both columns.[3]

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The three electrolytic capacitors: C1 1000 µF 25 V, C2 10 µF 16 V and C5 1 µF 25 V.[3]
  • The supply: 24 V DC from the adaptor at terminals A (+) and B (-), the LM342-12 regulator IC4 and the BC327 TS1 giving the -12 V and -8 V lines.[3]
  • Which controller does what: the right (green) controller carries R25 and the reset button SK7, the left (blue) controller R26 and the game select button SK8.[3]

Instruction leaflet

[edit | edit source]

The leaflet has 8 pages and no printed part number or date: a cover; screen shots of the 23 game variants and a drawing of the console with its parts lettered A to F; then instructions in French, Dutch and German, two pages each.[4] Page 2 carries the scanner's note "Scanned by Sly DC (2018)". The archive.org file holds 4893 by 6957 pixel page images; the hosted copy reduces them to 1700 pixels wide.[1][4]

Instruction leaflet contents (PDF pages)
Page Contents
1 Cover
2 Screens of game variants 1 to 23; the console with A (game select button), B (reset button), C (green player knob), D (blue player knob), E (aerial cable) and F (adaptor)
3 and 4 French: the controls, the six game types, connecting, starting a game, the order of the games, rules for each variant
5 and 6 Dutch: the same
7 and 8 German: the same

[4]

It settles the user-facing behaviour: the console is tuned to VHF channel 3, and a dealer can set it to channel 4; game type 1 (wipe-out) appears first after switching on; all games except wipe-out and flipper end at 15 points; turning the blue knob fully to the left switches that player out for one-player games.[4]
