Philips P2000C Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection

The mainboard and terminal board sub-chassis (System Reference and Service Manual, View 4). Most of the electrolytics on both boards are the same 4.7 µF 63 V part.

Philips's spare part catalogue for the Philips P2000C lists every electrolytic capacitor on the mainboard, the terminal board and the two option boards, with circuit positions, values and part numbers. It has no component list for the power supply unit or the monitor, which Philips serviced by replacement, so their capacitors have to be read from the boards themselves.[1][2][3] For the general signs of a failed capacitor see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

Before replacing anything

[edit | edit source]

Switch off before pulling the mains plug: the supply's input filters can leave a high voltage across the plug pins. Remove the mains connector before taking the cover off. The power supply has up to 800 V near its power transistor and heat sink, and the monitor's CRT board runs at 700 V with an anode that can stay charged.[2][4][3] See Philips P2000C General Maintenance for the removal procedures and CRT Discharge Procedure for the monitor.

The positions are the item numbers on Philips's service print, which is printed in white on the board, and the component location drawings in Part 4 show where each one is.[1][7][8] The other capacitors in these lists are ceramic or polypropylene types.[5][6]

The keyboard board's parts list has ceramic capacitors only.[10]

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The switch-mode power supply unit (5103 108 73540, service code 5103 109 30100) was a replacement part with no component list.[11][2] Tony Duell, restoring a P2000C in 2023, found RIFA capacitors on its board and replaced them before they could fail. He then tested the supply on its own, powered through a series light bulb, before connecting the rest of the machine.[12] How old RIFA suppression capacitors fail is described on Capacitor Failure Symptoms; any replacement across the mains must be a safety-rated (X or Y class) type of the same class and value.

After work on the supply, measure its outputs against Philips's specification before reconnecting the boards.[2]

Power supply outputs (Part 3, section 3.1)
Output Pins (ground) Tolerance
+5 V (V1) 11, 12, 13 (8, 9, 10) ±3 %
+12 V (V2) 6, 7 (4, 5) ±5 %
+12 V monitor (V3) 3 (4, 5) ±1 %, ripple under 30 mV peak to peak
-12 V (V4) 2 (4, 5) ±5 %

[2]

The supply's fuse holder is only reachable with the unit out of the case.[4]

Monitor

[edit | edit source]

The Mitsubishi NT-1002XU monitor (5103 108 73530, service code 5103 109 30110) was also a replacement unit, and Philips gives only its adjustments.[3][11] Its capacitors are not listed. If the picture is unstable or the wrong size after recapping, set it up with the adjustments on Philips P2000C General Maintenance.

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the machine, remove the cover and take out the sub-chassis that carries the mainboard and terminal board.[4]
  2. Separate the board you are working on: the terminal board is held by four screws with lock washers, the mainboard by three screws after the rear mask is removed.[4]
  3. Note the polarity of each capacitor and replace one at a time, with the same capacitance and the same or a higher voltage rating.
  4. Refit the lock washers under the terminal board screws, and the lock washer between the chassis and the mainboard's earth tags; they are part of the earthing.[4]
  5. Before refitting the cover, check that no wiring can be trapped.[4]
