Philips CDI 210 General Maintenance

Maintenance on the Philips CDI 210 centres on the battery-backed NVRAM, the power supply, the CD tray mechanism and the electrolytic capacitors on the mainboard. Which mainboard and supply a player has depends on the version number on its type plate (210/00 to 210/65); the versions table on the main page gives them.[1] Fault finding is on Philips CDI 210 Troubleshooting Guide and the capacitor lists on Philips CDI 210 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
Safety
[edit | edit source]- The power supply panel is at mains potential. Philips's instructions are to repair the player on an isolating transformer, never to change modules with the set switched on, and to use plastic alignment tools.[2]
- Unplug the player and leave the power switch on for a while before working on the supply, so the large filter capacitors discharge.[3]
- The CDM mechanisms contain a laser diode. The manual covers carry the Class 1 laser label and laser warnings in Finnish, Swedish and Danish.[4]
- Use an earthed wrist strap; most of the ICs are static-sensitive.[2]
Opening the player
[edit | edit source]Philips lists a Torx screwdriver set (4822 395 50145) among the service tools for the 210.[5] The exploded views in the 210 manuals show what has to come off before each part and how many screws hold it.

210/40 and later
[edit | edit source]The exploded view in the 210/40 manual has the cover held by seven screws, the CDM 12.4 loader by three, the gliding support (the video cartridge cage) by one, the mono panel by eight to ten depending on version, the power supply panel by three and the cover plate by four. Its drawing is labelled for the CDI 220 and its version notes name 220 variants, so treat the screw counts as a guide.[7] The detailed step-by-step strip-down that retrostuff photographed on a CDI 220/20, and the warning about the fragile flex cable to the disc drive, are on the CDI 220 maintenance guide.[8]
NVRAM
[edit | edit source]The 210 keeps its settings, the clock and game saves in battery-backed NVRAM, 8 KB on every version according to ICDIA.[1] Philips's parts lists give an MK48T08B-15 Timekeeper (7224) on the 210/00 and an M48T08-150PC1 (7241) on the 210/60.[9][10] The 210/40 list names a 32k × 8 NVRAM assembly instead, but it appears to have been copied from the CDI 220; retrostuff states that the NVRAM size on Mono III boards is set by resistors, 4.7 kΩ at 3241 for 8 KB.[11][12]
- The Timekeeper contains its own battery and crystal. Once the clock has been started the battery lasts some years; when it is flat the player loses its settings and clock and can stop at a light blue screen or a "memory full" error.[13]
- Back up the saves first. retrostuff uses a null-modem cable with an 8-pin mini-DIN plug and the CD-i'nterlink disc or the CD-i Link program.[14]
- Replace the chip with a standard wide 28-pin socket and a new ST M48T08-150PC1 or a Dallas DS1643. The old chip is often soldered on both sides of the board, so use fresh solder, flux and a desoldering gun.[13]
- A Timekeeper (but not a DS1643) can be calibrated from the low-level test with a frequency counter.[15]
Power supply
[edit | edit source]The 210/00 to 210/25 have a mains transformer wound for one region, on power supply board 3104 123 4060. A European board can be changed between 220-230 V and 240 V by moving the jumper from 9803 to 9802, but American and Japanese versions need a step-up or step-down transformer to run elsewhere.[3] On the 210/00 Philips gives the supply voltages at mainboard connector 1001 as +5 V ±5 % (pins 1 to 3), −5 V ±5 % (pin 4) and +25 V ±5 % (pin 5); the +5 V is set with trimmer 3807, "up to 5,3 V".[16][17] The display and power supply panel carries fuse 1805 (T2A) for the +5 V and +25 V outputs and 1806 (T1A) for −5 V.[18][3] retrostuff advises re-soldering the joints on this board's connectors, especially the power connector pads.[3]
The 210/40 has the multi-voltage 20PS302 switch-mode supply; retrostuff names the 210/40 and 210/57 among its users.[3] Its main glass fuse is T1.0A at 1101 and the four rail fuses are 65 V 4 A protection devices, 1201 to 1204.[3][19] The −5 V rail has a further fuse on the Mono III mainboard, 3274; on Mono IV boards (210/60) the corresponding fuse is 3255 near the power connector.[20]
CD loader
[edit | edit source]The 210/00 to 210/25 use the CDM 9 mechanism, the 210/40 the CDM 12.4 and the 210/60 the CDM 12.1.[1] Philips replaces the CDM 9 as an assembly; its laser current is a factory adjustment and needs no setting after a replacement.[21] For the CDM 12.1, retrostuff's routine after a repair is to grease the sledge gears and the guide rod and spread the grease by running the sledge in and out from the service shell; the replacement part for the CDM 12.1 is the Philips VAM 1202.[22]
Preventive checklist
[edit | edit source]- Read the version number from the type plate.
- Back up the NVRAM.
- Check that the mains voltage matches the player (210/00 to 210/25).
- Replace the NVRAM chip if the player forgets its settings.
- Measure the supply rails against the figures above.
- Inspect the electrolytics against Philips CDI 210 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
- After reassembly run the CD drive test in the service shell (troubleshooting guide).
