Philips CDI 350 Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection

The main board of the Philips CDI 350 uses surface-mount electrolytic capacitors, and they leak. When retrostuff opened a 350 he found an electrolyte smell and small drops of electrolyte on the board, and he traced discs not spinning, a dead input port and a flickering screen to the capacitors; replacing them cured all three faults.[1][2] retrostuff's list of 76 capacitors on the main board, compiled from the 350 and 360 service manuals and from the parts he removed, is reproduced below. It includes six film capacitors that he replaced at the same time.[2] The scanned 350 service manual lacks the parts-list pages for the servo and power sections (pages 78 and 79 of the original); the 360 manual has them.[2][3]

The Philips CDI 360 and Philips CDI 310 use variants of the same board; their differences are on the Philips CDI 360 Capacitor Replacement Guide and Philips CDI 310 Capacitor Replacement Guide.

  • Take the main board out as described on the Philips CDI 350 General Maintenance page. Many of the capacitors are on the underside.[4]
  • Clean all old electrolyte off the board, and check the tracks and vias under each capacitor before fitting new parts. See Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
  • retrostuff found it easier to solder the new SMD parts with an ordinary iron than with paste and hot air. Most replacements were taller than the originals, so he laid the radial ones down horizontally.[2]
  • Observe polarity. On this board the many + marks can mislead; use the white dot on the silkscreen. retrostuff fitted C938 and C991 the wrong way round at first, which, together with a failed ferrite bead, left the S-video and composite outputs dead.[2][5]
  • C939 sits under a screw of the hinge assembly. Its replacement must be no taller than about 7 mm, or the screw will damage it when the top cover is fitted.[2]

Main board capacitors

The section is the schematic diagram the part appears on, and the grid reference locates it on the main board layout in the service manual. The Philips code is the original 12NC service code, which retrostuff notes is no longer useful for ordering.[2]

[2]

In total there are 70 electrolytics: 16 × 47 µF 6.3 V, 13 × 22 µF 16 V, 11 × 10 µF 16 V, 8 × 47 µF 16 V, 7 × 100 µF 6.3 V, 3 × 220 µF 16 V, 2 × 470 µF 4 V and one each of 470 µF 6.3 V, 470 µF 16 V, 220 µF 6.3 V, 100 µF 16 V, 4.7 µF 25 V and 2.2 µF 50 V, plus four bipolar 0.47 µF 50 V parts (C830, C914, C915, C916), which must be replaced with bipolar types. The six film capacitors are C808, C813, C818, C903 and C904 (0.47 µF 50 V) and C833 (0.33 µF 50 V).[2]

The video section of the 350 parts list also names C471, 100 µF 16 V (4822 124 22728), which is not on retrostuff's main board list. Check whether your board carries it.[6]

Digital Video dock 22ER9142

[edit | edit source]

The 22ER9142 dock that holds the Digital Video cartridge has three SMD electrolytics and one radial. retrostuff found none of them leaking on his dock but replaced the three SMD parts.[5]

CX06 470 µF 6.3 V Radial electrolytic, 8 × 11.7 mm, pitch 4 mm
CX07 47 µF 16 V SMD electrolytic, 6.3 × 5.5 mm
CX09 100 µF 6.3 V SMD electrolytic, 6.3 × 5.5 mm

[5]

The LCD unit, its backlight converter and the AC adapter also contain electrolytics; retrostuff has not yet published lists for them.[2][5]

After recapping

[edit | edit source]
  • Run the board in the service position and play a disc with a magnetic clamper on it before reassembly.[4][2]
  • Run the low-level test and the service shell, as described on the Philips CDI 350 Troubleshooting Guide. retrostuff's player passed all tests after recapping.[2]
  • Check all three video outputs. If RGB works but S-video and composite do not, check the polarity of C938 and C991 and the ferrite bead LP05.[5]
