Philips CDI 360 Troubleshooting Guide

From RetroTechCollection
Philips CDI 360 (service manual cover)
The CDI 360, from its service manual

Fault finding on the Philips CDI 360 follows the same order and uses the same built-in software as on the Philips CDI 350: check that the player switches on through its front CPU, check the supplies, run the low-level test, then the service shell, then measure individual circuits.[1] The measurements in the two service manuals are the same, and they are set out with the test points on the Philips CDI 350 Troubleshooting Guide.[2] The points below are the ones specific to the 360.

Symptoms and first checks

[edit | edit source]
Common symptoms
Symptom Likely cause First check
No power, adapter LED off Mains lead or 22ER9150 adapter Check both plugs of the adapter and the socket[3]
No power, adapter LED on DC cable, power button, fuses FP01 and FP02, or the front CPU Reseat the DC cable and press the power button firmly; check FP01 and FP02, then the front CPU and supplies[3][4][1]
No picture on the LCD, external video works Display switched off, RGB cable connected, or the LCD unit Press the display on/off button and unplug the RGB in/out cable; a faulty LCD unit is replaced as a whole[3][5]
Settings lost at power-off Flat MK48T08B Timekeeper (IC04) Replace it as on the 350[6][7]
No S-video or composite, RGB present Open ferrite bead LP05 on the +12E rail Check LP05 (BLM32A07) for continuity[4][8]
Disc will not start Disc, condensation, or the CD servo Check the disc and let a cold player acclimatise; then run the service shell's CD tests[3][9]

Fuses

[edit | edit source]

The power section of the main board has two protective parts, FP01 and FP02; retrostuff identifies FP02 as the fuse for the +12B rail that feeds the LCD backlight.[10] On the /00, /05 and /11 versions both are 1 Ω fusible resistors (4822 117 10196); on the /17 they are fuses, 1/2 A 125 V (4822 253 30423) at FP01 and 3/4 A 125 V (4822 253 30424) at FP02.[4] Replace them only with the same parts: Philips marks safety components on the diagrams and requires identical replacements.[11]

Built-in test software

[edit | edit source]

Service shell

[edit | edit source]

Switch off, hold the display on/off button and action button 2 (right side), switch on and release both buttons. The 360 manual gives this key combination in both its service software and diagnostics chapters.[9][1]

Low-level test

[edit | edit source]

Connect a VT100 or VT220 terminal to the INPUT socket (port 2) at 9600 baud, no parity, no handshake, and switch on while holding the space bar, as on the CDI 205. The error codes are listed on the CDI 205 troubleshooting guide.[12][1]
