Philips CDI 615 General Maintenance

No service manual or published strip-down of the Philips CDI 615 has been found. ICDIA lists it among the players whose diagrams are in the Mono IV service manuals, and it shares the large Mono IV main board and the 20PS307 power supply with the CDI 660 and 670.[1][2][3] The board-level procedures (removing the main board, the NVRAM socket, the fuse positions and the 50/60 Hz links) are written up from a CDI 660 on the Philips CDI 660 General Maintenance page. The cabinet of the 615 is different at the front, where it carries a floppy drive, so check the screws and cables on your own player as you go.[4]
Safety
[edit | edit source]- Unplug the player and leave the power switch on for a while before opening it, so that the filter capacitors in the supply can discharge.[3]
- The 20PS307 is an earthed (Class 1) supply; use an earthed mains lead.[3]
- Philips' manual warns against touching the inner pins of the rear connectors because of static, and says that only a qualified person should take the cover off, because of the laser.[4]
Before you start
[edit | edit source]- Back up the NVRAM. The 615 keeps its settings and files in a 32 KB SRAM in a battery-backed DS1216C socket, and taking the SRAM out of the socket wipes it.[5][6] Battery damage in general is covered on Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage. retrostuff.org copies NVRAM contents to a PC over a null-modem cable with its CD-i Link program.[2]
- Remove any disk from the floppy drive with its eject button on the front.[4]
- Unplug the keyboard, printer, RS-232 cables and the aerial lead from the rear.[4]
Floppy disk drive
[edit | edit source]The 615 reads and writes PC-format 3.5-inch disks and can format them from a menu. The manual's checks for floppy errors are:[4]
- Copy to floppy failed: the disk is PC-formatted, not write-protected and has room for the file, and does not already hold a write-protected copy of it.
- Delete of floppy file failed: the disk is still in the drive, and neither the disk nor the file is write-protected.
- Format floppy failed: the disk is not write-protected, and its type matches the type chosen in the format menu.
The make and model of the drive fitted to the 615 have not been documented. Note the drive's cable and power connections before taking it out.
Group working cables
[edit | edit source]Players in a group are linked with D-sub 9 RS-232 cables, port 1 of one player to port 2 of the next. The specification of the cable is in Philips' technical documentation for the player, which has not been found.[4]
Fuses
[edit | edit source]The 615 has the same 20PS307 supply as the 660 and 670: a T1.0A mains fuse (1101) and two MP315 fuses (1200 and 1201) on the +5 V side. On the main board the −5 V fuse 3255 (MP100) sits beside the supply connector in grid square F1, and a resettable PTC fuse in grid square C1 protects the +5 V feed to the controller and serial ports and the RF modulator socket.[3][7] The supply pinout is on the Philips CDI 660 General Maintenance page.
Cleaning discs
[edit | edit source]Philips' advice is to wipe discs with a soft cloth from the centre outwards and not to use solvents, record cleaners or anti-static sprays meant for vinyl records.[4]
