No service manual for the Philips CDI 740 has been found. The only published strip-down is a set of photographs by Coffee Fueled Retro, which shows the power supply, the front display panel, the Digital Video cartridge, the CDM 12.1 mechanism and the Mono IV main board, without written steps.[1] The main board belongs to the same large Mono IV family as the CDI 660's, so the board-level work (NVRAM socket, fuse positions, 50/60 Hz links) is written up on the Philips CDI 660 General Maintenance page.[2] The 740's cabinet, front panel and power supply are its own.[3][4]

Safety

[edit | edit source]
  • Unplug the player and leave the power switch on for a while before opening it, so that the filter capacitors in the supply discharge. retrostuff.org warns that the large filter capacitors in CD-i supplies can give an electric shock if they are not discharged.[3]
  • Philips' manual says that only a qualified service person should take the cover off, because of the laser.[4]

Before you start

[edit | edit source]
  • Back up the NVRAM. The 740 has the 32 KB type, an SRAM in a battery-backed DS1216C socket, and taking the SRAM out of its socket wipes it.[5][6] Battery damage in general is covered on Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage. retrostuff.org uses a null-modem cable and its CD-i Link program to copy the contents to a PC.[2]
  • If the tray is locked ("TRAY LOCKED" on screen), unlock it before stripping the player: switch on while holding STOP for at least five seconds.[4]
  • Coffee Fueled Retro's gallery shows where the boards and cables sit inside a 740.[1]

[3] The 20PS308 differs from the 20PS307 of the professional players, whose +5 V fuses are numbered 1200 and 1201 and which has a C14 inlet.[3]

Main board

[edit | edit source]
  • The −5 V fuse 3255 (MP100, 65 V 1 A) sits beside the power supply connector, in grid square F1, on every Mono IV board. A resettable PTC fuse in grid square C1 protects the +5 V feed to the controller and serial ports and the RF modulator socket.[7]
  • −5 V is easiest to measure on pins A1, B1 and C1 of the extension connector.[7]
  • On large Mono IV boards a 10 kΩ link at 3290 (to ground) selects PAL and one at 3203 (to +5 V) selects NTSC, in grid square C2 on the track side.[2] The 740 has RGB on its Euroconnector, which retrostuff.org found gives a colour 60 Hz picture on most televisions after the change.[4][6]

Cleaning discs

[edit | edit source]

Wipe discs with a cleaning cloth from the centre outwards. Philips warns against solvents, cleaners and anti-static sprays meant for records.[4]
