No capacitor list for the Philips CDI 740 has been published. Philips' service manual for the 740 has not been found, and retrostuff.org reports that there is no service manual for its 20PS308 power supply.[1][2] The player contains the supply, a front display panel, a Digital Video cartridge, the CDM 12.1 mechanism and a large Mono IV main board, as Coffee Fueled Retro's strip-down photographs show.[3]

Main board

[edit | edit source]

ICDIA lists the 740 among the players whose diagrams are in the Mono IV service manuals.[1] The published main panel parts list for the board family is in the CDI 220/80 service manual: 29 capacitors of 1 µF and above, from 1 µF 50 V to 1000 µF 6.3 V, fourteen of them 47 µF 25 V.[4] The full list with positions and Philips part numbers is on the Philips CDI 660 Capacitor Replacement Guide. It is the 220/80's list: the 740 has the 32 KB NVRAM circuit, which the 220/80 does not, so check each position on your own board before ordering.[5][6]

Power supply (20PS308)

[edit | edit source]

The 20PS308 is the internal supply of the CDI 740: European version 3122 427 20283, 100–240 V input through an IEC C8 inlet, a T1.0A mains fuse (1101) and two MP315 fuses (1215, 1216) on the +5 V side. Its outputs are believed to be +5 V, −5 V and +12 V, but retrostuff.org has not confirmed them or the pinout.[2] Its capacitor values are not published. Photographs of the supply taken by Coffee Fueled Retro's author appear in retrostuff.org's power supply article and in the Coffee Fueled Retro gallery.[2][3] Unplug the player and leave the power switch on for a while before opening the supply, and treat the large filter capacitors as live until you have measured them.[2]

Front panel and Digital Video cartridge

[edit | edit source]

Neither the 740's front display panel nor its built-in Digital Video cartridge has a published parts list. Note each capacitor's value, rating and polarity from the part before removing it.

For signs of failure, see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
