Philips CDI 740 Troubleshooting Guide

No service manual or repair report specific to the Philips CDI 740 has been found, and retrostuff.org notes that little is known about its power supply.[1][2] Fault-finding therefore starts from the owner's checklist in the user manual and continues with the methods Philips published for the large Mono IV board in the CDI 220/80 service manual. The low-level test items, error codes and service shell procedure are set out in the Philips CDI 660 Troubleshooting Guide.[3][4]
Owner's checklist
[edit | edit source]| Symptom | Remedy given by Philips |
|---|---|
| No power | Check that the ON/OFF button on the front is on, that both plugs of the mains lead are in and that the socket is live |
| No picture | Check that the television is on and set to the same channel and source as the player; check the video lead |
| Distorted picture | Clean the disc with a soft cloth from the centre outwards |
| Tray will not open; "TRAY LOCKED" may show on screen and the open icon is missing | Switch off, then switch on while holding STOP for at least five seconds |
| Disc will not play | Label side up; clean the disc; try another disc |
| No sound | Check the audio leads; try another source on the amplifier |
| Distorted sound from a hi-fi | Make sure the player is not connected to the amplifier's phono input |
| Start-up screen does not return when the disc is removed | Switch off and on; check whether the program wants another disc |
| Remote control does nothing | Aim at the sensor, remove obstacles, change the batteries, and check that nothing is plugged into input 2 |
| Wired controller does nothing | Check its connection; switch off and on |
[3] On the 740 the tray is unlocked with STOP; on the CDI 660 and 670 the same job is done with PLAY.[3][5]
Diagnostics
[edit | edit source]- Low-level test: Philips' procedure for the Mono IV board is a VT100 terminal on port 2 with the space bar held down at power-on.[4] The 740 has one serial port at the back (mini-DIN 8, 9600 baud) besides the two front inputs; which of them carries the test is not documented.[3]
- Service shell: Philips' procedure is to link pins 2 and 3 (RXD2 and TXD1) of the front input port, or fit test plug 4822 264 50263, before switching on.[4] retrostuff.org found the module missing from the 660 and 670 ROM; no one has reported whether the 740 ROM has it.[6]
- Philips' rule for Mono IV boards: the servo, analogue audio and analogue video sections can be repaired to component level, while faults in the processor, CIAP or digital video sections meant a board exchange. If the low-level test will not run, check the supplies and the processor clocks first.[4]
Hardware faults
[edit | edit source]| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| No sign of life | 20PS308 fuses: 1101 (T1.0A, mains) and 1215, 1216 (MP315, +5 V); measure the outputs at both ends of the supply cable[2][7] |
| No or rolling picture, tray opening by itself, spindle turning, "cd" flashing, low-level test passes | −5 V fuse 3255 (MP100) beside the supply connector, grid square F1[7] |
| Pointing devices or serial devices get no power | Resettable PTC fuse in grid square C1 on the +5 V feed to the controller and serial ports[7] |
| Settings or clock lost at power-off | Cells in the DS1216C NVRAM socket[8] |
retrostuff.org's advice for any power fault on these players is to measure the supplies at both power connectors, at the points given in the service manuals, and at the extension connector for −5 V.[7]
