The Panasonic CF-2700 is an MSX1 home computer made by Matsushita Electric Industrial and sold outside Japan under the Panasonic name from 1985. It is the export version of the National CF-2700, with the keyboard and power supply in one case and two cartridge slots at the top right.[1][5] Matsushita's service manual for the export model is hosted here as the Panasonic CF-2700 Service Manual.

History and versions

[edit | edit source]

The National CF-2700 went on sale in Japan in October 1984 at ¥59,800, with 32 KB of RAM.[5] The Panasonic CF-2700 followed in 1985 with 64 KB. One version, with a QWERTY keyboard and a £ key, was sold in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain; the British price was £311.[1] A German version had a QWERTZ keyboard and cost 739 DM.[6] A version with an Ñ key went to Cuba in 1986 for use in schools and carries "Ministerio de Educacion" on the front.[7]

The service manual covers the 220 V model and notes that the British one runs on 240 V.[3] The rating label on a British machine reads 240 V, 50 Hz, 28 W.[4]

Matsushita used the same case for the National CF-1200 and the National FS-1300.[8]

Boards

[edit | edit source]

The parts list divides the export machine into a main board, a video board, a power source board and the keyboard.[9] The main board carries the processor, memory, video and sound chips and the regulators for every rail. The video board holds the PAL encoder (an AN2430), the colour-clock trimmer CT201, the video and sound sockets and the RF modulator. The mains lead runs through the power switch on the left side of the case to a small power source board with a line filter and the primary fuse, and from there to the transformer.[9][10][11]

The manual's main board uses eight DA4164ANL12M DRAMs (IC11 to IC18) and eight µPD416C-3 video RAMs (IC49 to IC56).[9] Each µPD416C-3 is drawn with +5 V, +12 V and −5 V supply connections.[12] Boards differ between batches. A German machine photographed for the MSX Resource Center has a main board marked DFUP0007ZBJ-1, with two DRAMs marked HM50464P-15 at IC11 and IC12, two TMS4416 video RAMs at IC49 and IC50 and a TMS9929NL video chip.[13] A Japanese National CF-2700 has a separate supply board (DFUP0002ZA-1) and a main board marked DFUP0001ZA-1.[14] Identify the board before using the manual's designators.

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The supply is linear. The transformer feeds the main board through CN1, and the main board makes +5 V with a discrete regulator round transistor Q1, +12 V with an AN7812R and −12 V with an AN7912T. The −5 V rail comes from −12 V through a resistor divider. There is a T160mA fuse on the power source board and a T3.15A fuse in the +5 V line on the main board.[11]

+5 V and +12 V only run while the PSW line is held at ground. If it is open, the AN7812R shuts down and +5 V follows, because the +5 V regulator takes its reference from +12 V; −12 V and −5 V stay on.[11] On the main board schematic the normally closed contacts of the two slot micro switches are wired in series from ground (CN5 pin 1) to CN5 pin 3, which is the PSW line, and the point between them (CN5 pin 2) goes to a slot connector's SW2 pin while PSW also goes to its SW1 pin.[15] A dirty or corroded switch can therefore keep the supply off until a cartridge is inserted.[16]

Connections

[edit | edit source]

Slot 1 is connector CN7 and slot 2 is CN6 on the wiring diagram.[15] The MSX Resource Center gives the slot nearer the front as slot 2.[1] The cartridge slots allow 300 mA from each +5 V pin and 50 mA each from +12 V and −12 V, and each joystick port allows 50 mA from its +5 V pin.[17] The rear panel carries the printer and cassette connectors, the sound and video outputs, the RF output and its channel trimmer; the power switch is on the left-hand side.[18]

The owner (13 November 2025): the fault was a blown T160mA fuse, and the machine worked once it was replaced.
