The National CF-2000 is the first MSX computer from Matsushita Electric Industrial, the company that has traded as Panasonic since 2008. It went on sale in Japan in October 1983 at ¥54,800 under Matsushita's National brand, with 16 KB of RAM, two cartridge slots and the keyboard and power supply in one case.[1][4] Matsushita's Japanese owner's manual is hosted here and described on Panasonic CF-2000 Documentation.
History
[edit | edit source]The CF-2000 was the first machine in National's "King Kong" range of MSX computers.[1] The later National CF-2700 doubled the RAM to 32 KB and was sold abroad as the Panasonic CF-2700 with 64 KB; the National CF-3000 has a separate keyboard.[5] The first CF-2700 used the same BIOS and BASIC ROM as the CF-2000.[5]

Hardware
[edit | edit source]The rear panel carries, from left to right, the cassette socket, the sound and video outputs and the 5-pin socket for the CF-2111 RF converter; the power switch is on the left-hand side and the two joystick ports on the right-hand side.[8] The RF converter takes its +5 V supply from pin 1 of the 5-pin socket.[6] The owner's manual describes the converter as an option bought separately; the MSX Resource Center lists it as included in the box.[7][1]
A photograph of an opened CF-2000 shows a mains transformer labelled FBM-202-002 (100 V, 13.2 V, 25.4 VA) and a separate power supply board with three large reservoir capacitors, joined to the main board by a ribbon harness. The main board, marked FBM-485-028, carries eight µPD416C-3 video RAMs and eight µPD416C-2 main RAMs, the AY-3-8910 (IC20) and the D8255AC-5 PPI (IC25), and on that machine a small board marked ROM ADP holding two EPROMs.[9] The µPD416 dynamic RAM runs from +5 V, +12 V and −5 V; Matsushita's service manual for the CF-2700 draws the same part with all three supplies.[10]
Using it safely
[edit | edit source]The owner's manual says to insert and remove cartridges only with the power off, and not to open the slot covers by hand: opening a slot cover while the machine is on destroys the program that is running.[11] It runs only on 100 V mains.[3]
