Panasonic CF-2000 Troubleshooting Guide

Inside a CF-2000: supply board at the left, main board at the right

No service manual for the Panasonic CF-2000 (sold in Japan as the National CF-2000) has been found. Matsushita's owner's manual has a short fault table, connector pinouts and the start-up screen; the checks below use those and a photograph of the inside.[1] For mains safety and the handling rules see the Panasonic CF-2000 General Maintenance guide.

Matsushita's fault table

[edit | edit source]

The owner's manual asks the user to work through this table, translated here, and to unplug the computer before taking any further action.[2]

Fault table from the CF-2000 owner's manual, page 26
Symptom Cause given Check
No picture No power The mains supply and the power cord
No picture Bad connection Reconnect as shown on page 4 and push plugs and connectors fully home
No picture Wrong television channel Match the RF converter's channel switch to the television; on a video input, set the television to video
No colour Television not adjusted Adjust the television's colour and contrast
No colour Program Check whether a COLOR statement has been run
Characters hard to read Television not adjusted Fine tuning and colour adjustment
Picture rolls Television not adjusted Tuning, vertical hold and horizontal hold
Only random characters on screen The computer did not start properly Switch off and on again
Keyboard does not respond The computer has crashed (program error) Press CTRL and STOP together; if that fails, switch off and on again
CSAVE or CLOAD fails Cassette recorder trouble Check the recording and playback leads and the cassette procedure on page 20; a tape saved at 2400 baud may not load except from a dedicated data recorder

Start-up screen

[edit | edit source]

A working CF-2000 shows this at switch-on, with the power lamp lit:[3]

Ok

If the lamp lights but there is no picture, check the video connection before the computer: composite video comes from the RCA socket, and the 5-pin DIN socket feeds only the CF-2111 RF converter.[4] On the MSX Resource Center forum, a Caps Lock lamp that toggles is used as a quick sign that the processor, ROM and RAM are running.[5]

Measure the rails

[edit | edit source]

Measure at a cartridge slot against pin 41: +5 V on pins 45 and 47, +12 V on pin 48 and −12 V on pin 50.[4] The memory is µPD416 dynamic RAM, eight chips for the main RAM and eight for the video RAM, and those chips also need −5 V, which is not on the slot.[6][7] Measure all three at one of the chips: pin 9 (+5 V), pin 8 (+12 V) and pin 1 (−5 V), against pin 16.[7]

Rail faults
Finding Look at
No rails, power lamp dark The mains supply (100 V), the power switch on the left side, the transformer, and the rectifiers and regulators on the supply board
One rail missing Its regulator and reservoir capacitor on the supply board, and the ribbon harness to the main board
+5 V pulled low A short on the main board; a failed ceramic decoupling capacitor can short the supply to ground[5]
−5 V or +12 V missing at the µPD416s The supply board and harness; the dynamic RAMs need all three supplies[7]

The owner's manual does not describe the supply board.[1]

Slot covers and cartridges

[edit | edit source]

According to the manual, opening a slot cover with the power on destroys the program that is running, so a crash when a cover is opened is normal. Insert and remove cartridges only with the power off.[8] If a cartridge does not start, try it in the other slot; unless its own manual says otherwise, either slot will do.[8]

Ports

[edit | edit source]
Port faults
Symptom Check
No picture through a television aerial input The CF-2111 RF converter, its +5 V supply on pin 1 of the 5-pin DIN socket, and its channel switch[4][2]
No sound The RCA sound output and the television's audio input[4]
Joystick dead The 9-pin port; the ports are driven by the sound chip (AY-3-8910 compatible) at TTL levels[4]
Recorder motor does not start REM+ and REM− on pins 6 and 7 of the cassette socket[4]
Printing The CF-2000 has no printer port; printers connect through the CF-2121 cartridge[9]
