Panasonic CF-2000 General Maintenance

The Panasonic CF-2000, sold in Japan as the National CF-2000, is a one-piece MSX1 computer from 1983 with its keyboard and mains power supply built in.[1] Matsushita's owner's manual is the only published documentation found for it; it gives handling rules, connector pinouts and a fault table but no circuit or disassembly information.[2] The steps below use that manual and photographs of the machine.
Mains supply
[edit | edit source]The CF-2000 is rated at AC 100 V, 50/60 Hz, 25 W.[3] On 220 to 240 V mains it needs a step-down transformer with a 100 V output and a rating comfortably above 25 W. The power switch is on the left-hand side of the case.[4] Inside, the transformer sits at the left rear with a separate power supply board in front of it; the transformer label reads 100 V, 13.2 V, 25.4 VA.[5] The power cord, the mains switch and the transformer primary carry mains voltage. Unplug the machine before opening the case.
Handling rules from the manual
[edit | edit source]Matsushita's manual lists these precautions:[6]
- Switch off before inserting or removing a cartridge, and push the cartridge fully home before switching on.
- Do not open the slot covers by hand. Opening one with the power on destroys the program in memory.
- Clean the case with a dry cloth. Do not use thinners or benzine.
- Keep the machine away from heat, cold, direct sunlight, dust and sudden temperature changes, which can discolour the case.
- Keep it away from radios, which it can interfere with.
Opening the case
[edit | edit source]No disassembly procedure for the CF-2000 has been published. Photograph each screw and connector before removing it. With the top cover off, the transformer and the supply board are at the left, the main board fills the right-hand two thirds of the case, and the supply board joins the main board through a ribbon harness.[5] Unplug that harness by its connector body, not by the wires.
Cartridge slots
[edit | edit source]The two slots take standard MSX cartridges on a 50-pin, 2.54 mm edge connector.[7] Clean the slot contacts with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free swab and let them dry before use. Clean a cartridge's edge connector the same way, holding it by the shell; the manual warns against touching the contacts with fingers.[6]
Supply checks
[edit | edit source]The cartridge bus is the easiest place to measure the rails:[7]
| Pin | Signal |
|---|---|
| 41, 43 | Ground |
| 45, 47 | +5 V |
| 48 | +12 V |
| 50 | −12 V |
The memory chips are µPD416 dynamic RAMs, which also need −5 V.[5][8] That rail is not on the slot. Measure it at pin 1 of any µPD416, with pin 16 as ground, and measure +12 V at pin 8 and +5 V at pin 9 of the same chip.[8] The owner's manual gives no tolerances for these rails.
Video, sound and cassette
[edit | edit source]- Composite video and sound come from the RCA sockets at the rear. The 5-pin DIN socket feeds the CF-2111 RF converter, which takes its +5 V from pin 1 of that socket.[7][4]
- The cassette socket is an 8-pin DIN with the motor control on pins 6 and 7.[7] A tape saved at 2400 baud may not load except from a dedicated data recorder.[9]
Capacitors
[edit | edit source]The supply board carries three large reservoir capacitors and one smaller one, and there are small electrolytics on the main board.[5] Advice on the MSX Resource Center forum is to replace the main supply's capacitors whatever their condition and to judge the others by the picture and sound.[10] The Panasonic CF-2000 Capacitor Replacement Guide explains how to record and replace them.
