From RetroTechCollection

The HB-10P/10B, AC-HB1P/HB1B Service Manual is Sony's service manual for the European Sony HB-10 MSX computers and their AC adaptors, part number 9-975-599-01, copyright Sony Corporation 1985 and printed in Japan in November 1985. The copy on the wiki is a 61-page PDF from the Internet Archive; its cover notes that it was scanned by abuur and converted to PDF by HansO in 2009.[1] It covers the HB-10P (220 V) and HB-10B (240 V) and the AC-HB1P and AC-HB1B adaptors.

The sections a repairer will use most:

  • Specifications (page 1-16): Z-80A at 3.579545 MHz, 64 KB RAM, 16 KB video RAM, 32 KB ROM, T6950 video controller, 74 keys, 7 W for the main unit (17 W maximum), 384 × 65.5 × 237 mm, about 1.9 kg.
  • Disassembly (pages 2-1 and 2-2): five case screws, the shield plate, nine board screws, connector CN2, the screw holding IC1, and six plus 21 screws for the keyboard.
  • The PU-37 schematic (pages 5-11 to 5-13), with the power section on page 5-12.
  • The location list and IC supply table (page 5-10): a grid position for every component and the +5 V and ground pins of each IC.
  • The adaptor schematic (page 5-17): thermal fuse, three fuses, rectifiers and the 330 µF reservoir.
  • Clock adjustment (page 6-1): CV1 for 22.168 MHz ±10 Hz at pin 38 of IC5.
  • Parts lists (pages 7-6 to 7-9): every capacitor with value, voltage and Sony part number.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • The manual names only the HB-10P and HB-10B. The Japanese HB-10, with 16 KB of RAM, the TMS9118NL video chip and separate composite outputs, is not covered, and the German HB-10D is not mentioned.
  • There is no fault-finding section and no tolerance for the supply rails.
  • The IC supply table on page 5-10 has two slips. It gives pin 3 as both the +5 V and the ground pin of IC1, and it puts pin 2 of IC20 in a "−5 V" column. The schematic on page 5-12 shows IC20 as the −12 V regulator with its input on pin 2 and its output on pin 3.
  • The known design faults found later by owners (the /RESET diode, the R22 value in the PSG output and the port A8h RAM mirror) are not mentioned. See the Sony HB-10 Troubleshooting Guide.
