Sony HB-F1XD Service Guide
The HB-F1XD サービスガイド (HB-F1XD Service Guide) is Sony's Japanese-language service guide for the HB-F1XD, an MSX2 computer with a built-in 3.5-inch floppy drive. The cover gives the price as ¥54,800 and the release as October 1987 (Shōwa 62).[1] The copy hosted here is a 22-page PDF scanned by Hans Otten (HansO) in 2001 from a photocopy supplied by Bas Kornalijnslijper of the MCWF, and comes from the MSX Archive.[2] Bound in after the cover is Sony's supplement 追加-1 (Addition 1), part number 9-953-028-81, dated August 1988, which covers the floppy drive.[3]
It is the nearest Sony service document to the Sony HB-F1XDJ and Sony HB-F1XV, which use the same case and the same HIC-1 video and audio module, and for which no service manual has been found.[4][5]
Contents
[edit | edit source]The guide has no contents list. This is what each page holds:
| PDF page | Printed page | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | none | Cover, price and release date, outline specification (CPU, memory, display, keyboard, floppy drive), a note that the machine is built to Japanese electrical safety law and cannot be used abroad |
| 2 | none | Supplement 追加-1: the floppy drive is the MFD-11W-51L; its documentation is the separate MP-F11W guide (9-975-185-60), and the drive is the MP-F11W-50L without its front panel, eject button and LED |
| 3 | 2 | Input and output connectors, general specification, accessories, service precautions |
| 4 | 3 | Names and functions of the controls, front and rear |
| 5 | 4 | Removing the floppy drive unit; memory map |
| 6 | 5 | Adjustments: the BASIC check program, CPU clock, timer clock, floppy controller VCO and read pulse, with the test points on the PU-14 main board |
| 7 | 6 | Outline drawings of the semiconductors |
| 8 | none | Semiconductor locations by grid reference; notes on the board drawings |
| 9 to 11 | 7 to 10 | Board drawings: VR-5, VR-6 and LE-10 control and lamp boards, keyboard, PU-14 main board, PS-5 power board, CN-12 drive connector board |
| 12 | 11 | HIC-1 circuit diagram (RGB/NTSC encoder module) |
| 13 to 16 | 12 to 15 | Exploded views and mechanical parts lists: cabinet, chassis, keyboard, keytops |
| 17 to 22 | none | Schematic diagrams, including the power supply on page 22 |
The specification on PDF page 3 gives AC 100 V ±10 %, 50/60 Hz, a maximum consumption of 31 W, a size of 416.5 × 81.5 × 300 mm and a weight of about 3.7 kg. The accessories include two AA (単3) dry cells.[6]
What it settles
[edit | edit source]- The power supply on the HB-F1XD (PDF page 22): the transformer on the PS-5 board feeds the PU-14 main board through CN5. +5 V comes from D1 and D2 (S2V20F), reservoir C1 (22,000 µF, 16 V) and regulator IC1 (SI-3062V), with 10.1 V at its input and 4.9 V at its output and C10 (47 µF, 16 V) on the output. +12 V comes from D3 (10E2-TA2), C11 (330 µF, 35 V) and IC2 (µPC78L12), 22.5 V in and 12.5 V out, with C15 (47 µF, 16 V). −12 V comes from D4 (10E2-TA2), C12 (330 µF) and IC3 (NJM79L12A), −23 V in and −12 V out, with C16 (47 µF, 16 V). The floppy drive takes its power from CN7.[7]
- The adjustments (PDF page 6): CPU clock 3,579,530 to 3,579,550 Hz at TP2, set with CV1; timer clock at TP1, set with CV2 to the range printed as "15,9999Hz ~ 16,000Hz", using the check program to start the clock output; floppy controller VCO 253 kHz at TP5, set with RV1, about three minutes after switch-on and with TP4 (pin 22 of IC10) grounded; read pulse 500 ns at TP3, set with RV2. All are on the PU-14 board. The check program's header reads "for HB-F5/F500".[8]
- The HIC-1 module's internal circuit (PDF page 12), which the HB-F1XDJ and HB-F1XV capacitor guides refer to.
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No electrical replacement parts list. Component values appear only on the schematic, and the parts lists cover cabinet, chassis and keyboard parts.
- No fault-finding section and no self-test procedure.
- Nothing for the floppy drive beyond the supplement's note; Sony put the drive in the separate MP-F11W guide, which is not part of this scan.
- Nothing specific to the HB-F1XDJ or HB-F1XV. Their main boards differ from the HB-F1XD's (they carry the MSX2+ video chip and the FM sound chip), so check any designator or value against the board before using it on those machines.
- The schematic pages are reduced to fit the page, and small print on them is hard to read in this scan.
