Sony HB-F500P and HB-F500F Service Manual

From RetroTechCollection

The HB-F500P/F500F Service Manual is Sony's English-language service manual for the two European versions of the Sony HB-F500: the HB-F500P (AEP model) and the French HB-F500F. The copy hosted here is Hans Otten's (HansO) 2001 scan of an original supplied by Bas Kornalijnslijper of the MCWF, split into two PDFs of 26 and 72 pages. It comes from the MSX Archive.[1] The MSX Resource Center links the same two files from its page on the HB-F500 series.[2]

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The specification of the European models: 220 V, 45 W, three cartridge slots, 64 KB of main RAM and 128 KB of VRAM, and a 720 KB drive.[3]
  • How the front panel, the slot board, the drive and the supply heat sink come out.[4]
  • The supply: a linear design on the PS-101 board with an STR9005 for +5 V, an SI-3122V for +12 V and an NJM79L12A for −12 V, and the value of every capacitor on it.[5][6]
  • The electrolytic capacitors on the PU-35 main board, the DUS-111 video board, the EX-101 slot board and the keyboard.[7][8][6]
  • The memory map with RAM split between slots 0-0 and 0-2, and the chip-level description of the S-3527, the floppy interface and the clock.[9][10]
  • The alignment points and figures.[11]

These figures are used in the Sony HB-F500 General Maintenance, Sony HB-F500 Troubleshooting Guide and Sony HB-F500 Capacitor Replacement Guide.

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • Nothing on the Japanese HB-F500. Its main board is a different design (PU-46, 1-617-525-12), with different IC numbers, a 100 V supply and a Kanji ROM.[12][13][2]
  • Three values differ between the supply schematic and the parts list: C902 is 15,000 µF on the schematic and 10,000 µF in the list, C903 is 330 µF on the schematic and 470 µF in the list, and D902 and D903 are S2V20F on the schematic and U05G in the list.[5][6]
  • The DUS-111 parts list gives the same Sony part number, 1-123-306-00, for C527 at 10 V and for C529 at 6.3 V.[8]
  • The CPU clock figure is printed as "3.578281Hz ±5Hz", and the blue and green RGB levels are both given as adjusted with RV502.[11]
  • The Ni-Cd back-up battery appears in the circuit description (BATT501 on the DUS-111 board) and the operating chapter, but the scanned parts lists do not give it a part number.[10][14]
  • No fault-finding chart.

  14. ↑ Sony, HB-F500P/F500F Service Manual, part 1, PDF page 8 (printed 1-7): the calendar clock is backed up by a nickel-cadmium battery. After the HB-F500P has been on for 8 hours, the battery keeps the clock for 1 week with the machine off; it recharges whenever the machine is on, and a full charge lasts about 2 months. When it is weak the clock does not keep time and the memory-switch settings (title, prompt, screen and beep) are lost; Sony advises switching the machine on from time to time.
