Sony HB-F500 Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection
Sony HB-F500 main board
Japanese HB-F500 main board (PU-46). Its layout and designators differ from the European PU-35 board listed below.

Sony's service manual for the HB-F500P and HB-F500F lists every capacitor in the European Sony HB-F500, with part numbers, so the tables below are taken from it. The Japanese HB-F500 uses a different main board (PU-46) and a 100 V supply; check its boards against these lists before ordering.[1][2][3]

Which to replace first

[edit | edit source]

The HB-F500 is not on the MSX Resource Center's list of MSX machines with failure-prone capacitors.[4] General advice there is that the main power supply capacitors are worth replacing whatever their condition, that audio and video capacitors show their state in the output, and that the small supply-bypass capacitors around the board can usually wait.[5] On this machine that means the PS-101 board first, then the DUS-111 video board if the picture or sound is poor.

Circuit board tracks on this model lift easily when soldered or desoldered, so take care removing capacitors.[6]

Power supply, PS-101 board

[edit | edit source]
PS-101 capacitors (parts list, part 2 page 7-14)[1][7]
Ref Value Voltage Sony part number Position
C901 22,000 µF electrolytic 16 V 1-125-413-00 +5 V reservoir, after bridge D901
C902 10,000 µF electrolytic (15,000 µF on the schematic) 25 V 1-124-772-11 +12 V reservoir
C903 470 µF electrolytic (330 µF on the schematic) 35 V 1-123-348-00 −12 V reservoir
C907 100 µF electrolytic 10 V 1-123-307-00 +5 V output, IC901
C908 100 µF electrolytic 16 V 1-123-333-00 +12 V output, IC902
C909 100 µF electrolytic 16 V 1-123-333-00 −12 V output, IC903
C904 to C906 0.33 µF film 50 V 1-136-171-00 Regulator inputs
C910 to C916 0.022 µF ceramic 50 V 1-101-005-00 Across the rectifier diodes
C917, C918 0.022 µF film 250 V 1-130-456-00 Across the mains, either side of L901; safety-critical
C920 2200 pF ceramic 400 V 1-161-742-00 Across the power switch S901; safety-critical

Check the values printed on the C902 and C903 fitted to your board before ordering, as the schematic and parts list disagree. C917, C918 and C920 are safety parts and must be replaced with the same type.[7][1]

Main board, PU-35

PU-35 electrolytic capacitors (parts list, part 2 page 7-9)[8]

C6 470 µF 6.3 V 1-123-298-00
C12 3.3 µF 50 V 1-123-382-00

C46 33 µF 6.3 V 1-123-318-00
C65 10 µF 16 V 1-123-356-00

The remaining PU-35 capacitors are ceramic and film. CV1 and CV2 are trimmer capacitors for the clocks; do not disturb them, and if they are moved, set them again as described in the Sony HB-F500 General Maintenance guide.[8][9]

C527 and C529 share a part number in the list but are given different voltages; fit 10 V or higher for both. The DUS-111 also carries the Ni-Cd clock battery, BATT501.[10][11]

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the machine and remove the upper case. For the PS-101 board, take off the bottom plate and the heat sink as described in the Sony HB-F500 General Maintenance guide; for the EX-101 board, remove the front panel and cartridge holders first.[12]
  2. Replace one capacitor at a time, matching value, at least the voltage rating, and polarity.[5]
  3. Desolder gently; the board tracks on this model lift easily.[6]
  4. Check the Ni-Cd battery on the DUS-111 board for leakage while the board is accessible.[11]
  5. Reassemble, refitting the heat sink's insulating sheet.[12]

After the recap

[edit | edit source]

Measure +5 V at pins 45 or 47, +12 V at pin 48 and −12 V at pin 50 of a cartridge slot, against pin 41.[13] Check that the machine starts into MSX Disk BASIC and that the RGB and composite pictures are clean. If colours are wrong after work on the DUS-111 board, set the RGB levels as described in the Sony HB-F500 General Maintenance guide.[9]

  5. ↑ 5.0 5.1 Recap recommendations, June 2018—link(accessed 2026-10-21) Reply by RetroTechie, 23 June 2018: in an MSX, the electrolytics used for supply bypassing round the board can often be removed without the machine stopping; those in the audio and video circuits show their condition in the output; those in the main power supply are worth replacing whatever their condition; compare the service manual's parts list with the board, and replace capacitors one at a time to avoid mixing up values or polarity; buy from established distributors. Wlcracks recommends Rubycon, Chemi-Con, Nichicon or Panasonic parts and checking the board for leakage and smell.
