Sony HB-101P and HB-201P Service Manual

The HB-101P/201P Service Manual is Sony's service manual for the European versions of the Sony HB-101 and Sony HB-201 MSX computers: the HB-101P in its AE (220 V) and E (120/240 V) versions and the HB-201P in its AE version. The copy on the wiki is a 69-page PDF from the Internet Archive, also held in the MSX Archive. Its cover notes that it was scanned and converted to PDF by HansO in 2001 from an original supplied by Bas Kornalijnslijper of the MCWF.[1][2] The scan does not show Sony's part number for the manual.

The sections a repairer will use most:

  • Type differences (page 1-1): HB-101P type 1 with 32 KB and 120/240 V, type 2 with 32 KB and 220 V, HB-201P with 64 KB and 220 V.
  • Specifications (page 1-14): Z-80A at 3.56250 MHz, 48 KB ROM, TMS9129NL, 15 W, 380 × 70 × 275 mm, about 3.1 kg.
  • Removal procedures (pages 2-1 and 2-2), including the claws of the upper cabinet and the 21 keyboard screws.
  • Firmware ROM (page 2-2): IC8 and its MASK/EP jumper JW1.
  • IC supply table (page 5-16) and location list (page 5-15).
  • Power supply schematic (page 5-23): FU-29, transformer, PU-34 rectifiers and reservoirs, RE-23 regulator, ±12 V regulators, for both the AE and E versions.
  • Clock adjustment (page 6-1): VC1 for 3.562500 MHz ±10 Hz at pin 6 of IC6.
  • Parts lists (pages 7-7 to 7-11), with Sony part numbers.

What this manual does not contain

  • The Japanese HB-101 and HB-201 are not covered. The Japanese HB-101 is built on a different main board, the PU-28.[3]
  • There is no fault-finding section and no tolerance for the supply rails.
  • The PAL encoder module (1-464-507-11) is shown in the schematic but not broken down in the parts list.
  • The parts list and the schematic give different voltage ratings for C32, C33, C36, C37 and C903, and the list prints the 4700 µF reservoirs C30 and C31 as "0.0047". It also lists C15 and C16 twice, and gives the same part number, 1-123-306-00, as 4.7 µF at C6 and 47 µF elsewhere. The details are in the Sony HB-101 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
  • The location list places C40 and C41, which are not in the parts list.
