Sony HB-201 Capacitor Replacement Guide

The European Sony HB-201 (HB-201P) uses the same PU-34 main board as the HB-101P. Sony's service manual gives one capacitor list for both, with no capacitor marked for one model only, so the HB-201P's electrolytics are those in the Sony HB-101 Capacitor Replacement Guide: 21 on the PU-34 board and C903 on the RE-23 regulator board.[1] That guide also sets out where Sony's parts list and schematic disagree on voltage ratings.

Power supply capacitors on the HB-201P

[edit | edit source]

These carry the supply rails and are the ones to check first.

HB-201P power supply electrolytics
Ref Board Capacitance Voltage (list / schematic) Grid square Position in the circuit
C30, C31 PU-34 4700 µF 16 V / 16 V A-2, A-3 Reservoirs for the +5 V supply
C32 PU-34 330 µF 50 V / 35 V A-3 Input of IC48 (+12 V)
C33 PU-34 330 µF 50 V / 35 V A-3 Input of IC49 (−12 V)
C36 PU-34 47 µF 25 V / 16 V A-4 Output of IC48
C37 PU-34 47 µF 25 V / 16 V A-4 Output of IC49
C903 RE-23 47 µF 25 V / 16 V – Output of the SI-3052V (+5 V)

[1][2] Where the list and the schematic disagree, fit the higher voltage.

The other 15 electrolytics on the PU-34 board, with Sony part numbers and grid squares, are in the HB-101 guide. They include C6, which the list gives as 4.7 µF under a part number used for 47 µF elsewhere; read it on the board before ordering.[1]

Japanese HB-201

[edit | edit source]

No parts list for the Japanese HB-201 has been published. A photograph of an opened Japanese machine shows a separate power board carrying the large reservoirs and other electrolytics, with C905 and C906 among its reference numbers and a diode, D901.[3] Read the value and voltage printed on each capacitor and record them before removing anything. The main board appears to follow the PU-34 design, but check every position against the board itself before using the European list.

Replacement procedure

[edit | edit source]

Warning: the HB-201 has a mains transformer and fuse inside the case. Unplug the mains cable before opening it.

  1. Remove the board as described in HB-101 General Maintenance; the procedure is the same on the HB-201P.
  2. Photograph the board and note each capacitor's polarity.
  3. Replace the power supply capacitors first, then the rest.
  4. Fit parts of the same capacitance and at least the higher voltage rating.
  5. After refitting, check +5 V across C903, +12 V across C36 and −12 V across C37.[2]
