Sony HB-101 Capacitor Replacement Guide

The European Sony HB-101 (HB-101P) has 21 electrolytic capacitors on its PU-34 main board and one on the RE-23 regulator board. Sony's service manual lists them all with value, voltage and part number, and its location list gives a grid square for each on the board drawing.[1][2] The same board and list serve the HB-201P.

The Japanese HB-101 is built on a different board, the PU-28, for which no parts list has been published. Its capacitors have to be read from the board itself.[3]

Where the parts list and the schematic disagree

[edit | edit source]

Sony's parts list and its power supply schematic give different voltage ratings for several of the power supply capacitors:[1][4]

  • C32 and C33: 330 µF 50 V in the list, 330 µF 35 V on the schematic.
  • C36, C37 and C903: 47 µF 25 V in the list, 47 µF 16 V on the schematic.
  • C30 and C31: printed in the list as "0.0047" at 16 V, which matches the schematic's 4700 µF 16 V only if read in farads.

The list also gives Sony part 1-123-369-00 as 4.7 µF 50 V at C8 and 4.7 µF 63 V everywhere else, and part 1-123-306-00 as 4.7 µF at C6 but 47 µF at C9, C13, C17 and C25. Where the two disagree, fit the higher voltage rating. Read C6 on the board before ordering.

PAL encoder module

[edit | edit source]

The PAL encoder is a separate module, Sony part 1-464-507-11, and the parts list does not break it down.[1] Its schematic, on page 5-23 of the manual, shows electrolytics of its own, among them C1, C6 and C7 (0.47 µF 50 V) and C2, C5 and C18 (100 µF 10 V), numbered within the module.[4]

Replacement procedure

[edit | edit source]

Warning: the HB-101 has a mains transformer and fuse inside the case. Unplug the mains cable before opening it.

  1. Remove the PU-34 board as described in General Maintenance.
  2. Photograph the board and note the polarity of every capacitor before removing anything.
  3. Start with the power supply parts in grid row A: C30 to C33, C36 and C37, then C903 on the RE-23 board.
  4. Remove each old capacitor and clear the holes with a desoldering pump or braid.
  5. Fit parts of the same capacitance and at least the higher of the two voltage ratings above, observing polarity. Check that the replacements for C30 and C31 fit under the shield plate before ordering.
  6. Refit the board, reconnect CN13 and CN14, and check the rails.

After the recap

[edit | edit source]

With the machine running, measure:[4]

  • +5 V across C903 on the RE-23 board
  • +12 V across C36
  • −12 V across C37

Then check that BASIC and the Personal Databank start. The Sony HB-101 Troubleshooting Guide covers missing rails.
