Philips NMS 8280 General Maintenance

The Philips NMS 8280 has its own service manual and its own power supply, analogue unit and control unit, so most of its maintenance differs from the Philips NMS 8250's. It uses the same type of disk drive and the same clock battery as the NMS 8250 and NMS 8255.[1][2] The cabinet is shown in exploded views on PDF pages 19 and 20 of the service manual.[1]
Safety
[edit | edit source]The mains comes into the power supply board itself, through the line filter L901 and the fuse F1001 to the transformer T901, with the mains switch SW901 wired to it. R1050 on the −12 V side is a fusible resistor, marked on the diagram with a warning triangle. Replace it with the same part (Philips 4822 113 90219), not a plain resistor.[3] Unplug the machine before opening it. Philips's manual adds that cartridges should be changed only with the computer switched off, and that the ICs are sensitive to static: work connected to the set's ground through a wrist strap with a resistor.[4]
Power supply care
[edit | edit source]The supply's rectifier diodes are its weak point; see Philips NMS 8280 Troubleshooting Guide for the symptoms. Two maintenance points come from MSX Resource Center members:
- The supply board has wire links marked J220V and J240V.[3] One member advises moving the jumper from 220 V to 240 V, saying "The 4 diodes will love you for it".[5] Check which link is fitted before changing it, and keep to what suits your mains.
- When replacing the diodes, Repair-Bas pointed an owner to a photograph of the way he mounts them; the owner took it to mean standing them further off the board for better cooling.[6]
- Keep the supply board free of dust. On an NMS 8255 a coat of dust on the rectifiers acted like a thermal insulator and the board darkened round them; see Philips NMS 8255 General Maintenance.
Alignments
[edit | edit source]Philips gives these adjustments on PDF pages 2 and 3 of the service manual, with figures on pages 4 and 5. Use a 10:1 probe throughout.[4]
| Circuit | Adjust | Measure at (ground) | Setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTC clock | VC101 | TP107 (TP111) | 32.768 kHz |
| FDC read-pulse width | VR102 | TP106 (TP109), with TP108 linked to TP109 | 0.5 µs pulse width; remove the link afterwards |
| FDC VCO | VR104 | TP102 (TP109), computer on, TP108 linked to TP109 | 250 kHz; remove the link afterwards |
| Analogue unit clock | VC301, then VC302 | TP309 (TP316) for frequency; TP308 (TP314) for voltage | 3,554,688 ±20 Hz; 1.2 ±0.1 V; recheck the frequency. Video mix slide in graphics mode |
| Burst frequency | VR306 | TP310 (TP316) | Printed as 4,443,619 ±20 Hz in graphics mode, then checked as 3,443,619 ±20 Hz in EXT mode; see the note below |
| Burst position | VR304 | Video input of the modulator, pin 3 (TP316) | Time T1 in figure 3 to 5 ±0.2 (unit printed as ms); graphics mode |
| PAL delay line | VR303 (amplitude), T303 (phase) | Picture from a PM5515 pattern generator in DEM mode on the video input, EXT mode | No venetian blinds in the blocks of field 3 named in figure 4 |
| Subcarrier phase | VR305 | Same picture | All four blocks of field 3 grey |
| Video signal level | Digitise level slide, then VR302 | TP303 (TP316), PM5515 on colour bars | Amplitude A 1 ±0.05 Vpp, then B, C and D equal (figure 5) |
| Video mix level | VR307 to VR310 and the video mix slide | TP312 (TP314) against TP311 and TP313, after COLOR 14,15,15 |
Equal amplitudes; mix slide set for 0.4 ±0.02 Vpp at TP312 |
Both burst frequencies printed in the manual differ from the 4.433619 MHz that Philips gives for the analogue unit of the NMS 8250 and NMS 8255, which is the PAL colour subcarrier.[7][8] Treat them as misprints and do not turn VR306 unless the colour is wrong.
Disk drives
[edit | edit source]The NMS 8280 uses the same drive part number as the NMS 8250 and NMS 8255 (4822 693 91114), fitted as U106 and U107.[2] Philips's drive procedure needs a dual-trace oscilloscope, the alignment disk 4822 395 30274 and the NMS 8280's own FDD test cartridge 4822 397 30171, started with CALL FDDTEST.[9] The steps are:
- Check the radial alignment on track 40 of the alignment disk: all lobes of the cat's eye pattern should have the same amplitude. If not, loosen the stepping motor screws a quarter turn, turn the motor until they match, tighten and recheck from tracks 00 and 79.
- Check the track 00 sensor: 4.5 V across it on tracks 00 and 01 and 0 V on track 02.
- Check the azimuth. A tolerance of ±30′ is allowed and the head cannot be adjusted.
- Set the index burst with the drive's VR2 to 400 ±200 µs.
- Repeat for side 1.[9]
Repair-Bas publishes a preventive modification for this drive, which lists the NMS 8250, NMS 8255 and NMS 8280 among the machines that use it. It is for drives that still work: a small cam on the eject mechanism is cut away so that it does not spring back while a disk is removed and let the head catch on the disk's shutter.[10] Follow the photographs in the document. For general drive care see Floppy Drive Repair.
Clock battery
[edit | edit source]The real-time clock (IC162, RP5C01) keeps its settings on a NiCd accumulator on the main board, Philips part 4822 138 10213.[2] On the MSX Resource Center, one member advises checking it for leakage. Another says these cells are sealed and not known to leak, but have usually run down, and recommends cutting them out; a CR2032 cell with a diode to stop it being charged has been used in its place. A gold capacitor in its place keeps the clock for about two weeks.[5] If the cell has leaked, see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Front panel
[edit | edit source]The front panel plastic becomes brittle with age and breaks easily under pressure, especially in shipping. Pack the machine so that nothing presses on the front, including the sliders and the source select knob.[11][5]

The 4 diodes will love you for it." jltursan: the NMS 8280 "doesn't usually suffer of leaking or dying caps". Grauw: recapping a machine with no problems can do more harm than good (broken traces, placement errors); the front panel plastic of the Philips desktop models is very brittle and breaks easily under pressure, especially in shipping. Pac: check the internal battery for leakage, and consider the sound fixes for the NMS 8250, 8255 and 8280. meits: the battery has probably gone below 1 V; it is sealed and not known to leak, the cells he showed came from NMS 8250s and 8255s left off for about twenty years; cutting it out is best; a CR2032 with a diode to prevent charging has been used. gianlucarenzi: a gold capacitor keeps the RTC for a couple of weeks. gianlucarenzi, 1 November 2020: his battery read 0.2 V with no leakage.
- ↑ power supply question NMS8280, November 2005—link(accessed 2026-10-21) msxrestarter's NMS 8280 power supply had its diodes removed by a former owner. Repair-Bas, 19 November 2005: the diodes are missing and the −12 V regulator looks bad; "The power IC on the side of the computer is normal. In the 2nd and 3rd series of the 8280 you can find this"; fit new 6 A diodes and a new 7912 (IC1052); his web page shows "the best way to mounting them". msxrestarter: "So it's better to mount them higher, I mean further away from the print, so the cooling is better I suppose?" 25 November 2005: with new diodes and a new 7912 the machine runs again, boots, and the drives and cartridge slots work, but the video input shows a black diagonal stripe and a horizontal "rainbow" stripe. HansO, 28 November 2005: use an oscilloscope and the service manual, "The circuit diagram is quite good"; "It looks like the sync signal is not getting through."
