Philips VG-8010 Capacitor Replacement Guide

The electrolytic capacitors of the Philips VG-8010 and its VU-0022 supply are drawn on the circuit diagrams in Philips's service manual for the VG 8000 and VG 8010. Its parts lists give values for only some of them: C827, C847, C849 and C862 (10 µF, 50 V) on each encoder board, and C196, C197, C200 and C203 in the supply.[1] The other values below are read from the diagrams, where a letter beside each electrolytic gives its voltage rating: c = 6.3 V, d = 10 V, e = 16 V, f = 25 V, g = 40 V, h = 63 V.[2]
VU-0022 supply
[edit | edit source]
| Ref | Value | Voltage | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| C196, C197 | 22 µF | 385 V | Mains reservoirs after the BYW55 bridge, about 310 V |
| C194 | 680 µF | f (25 V) | Supply to the TEA1039 controller |
| C195 | 22 µF | g (40 V) | TEA1039 pin 2 |
| C198 | 47 µF | f (25 V) | Auxiliary winding, after D184 |
| C203 | 4700 µF | 10 V | +5 V reservoir after D189 |
| C201 | 330 µF | d (10 V) | +5 V output after the choke S210; R168 sets 5 V across it |
| C200 | 330 µF | not given | +12 V reservoir after D187 |
| C199 | 220 µF | e (16 V) | +12 V output after the choke S209 |
| C204 | 150 µF | f (25 V) | -12 V reservoir after D186 |
| C205 | 47 µF | f (25 V) | -12 V output after R159 |
C203
[edit | edit source]In the VG 5000 Bazar repairs of this supply, C203 had failed short in all three dead units: it was warm, the +5 V output was erratic and the +12 V output was below 7 V. Replacing it repaired all three.[4]
- Unplug the supply and open it (four screws in the corner wells), as on Philips VG-8010 General Maintenance.
- Fit 4700 µF at 10 V or higher. The original is axial, 16 mm in diameter and 32 mm long. A radial part also fits if you clear the two spare solder-filled holes the board has for it.
- The positive lead goes to the hole furthest from the ground, +12 V and +5 V wires.
- Measure the outputs before reconnecting the computer: about +5.2 V, +11 V and -11.4 V on a working supply.
[4] The same procedure, with photographs described, is on Philips VG-5000 Capacitor Replacement Guide, since the VG-5000 uses this supply.
Main board
[edit | edit source]| Ref | Value | Voltage | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| C832, C834 | 150 µF | c (6.3 V) | +5 V at the power connector |
| C833, C835 | 68 µF | e (16 V) | +12 V at the power connector, either side of L461 |
| C836 | 68 µF | e (16 V) | -12 V at the power connector |
| C837 | 68 µF | printed c (6.3 V); see note | -12 V, after L462 |
| C828 | 150 µF | c (6.3 V) | +5 V at the video RAM |
| C829 | 150 µF | c (6.3 V) | +5 V at the keyboard decoder IC698 |
| C830, C831 | 150 µF | c (6.3 V) | +5 V decoupling |
Note on C837: the diagram marks it with c (6.3 V) although it sits on the -12 V rail, while its partner C836 on the same rail is marked e (16 V). A 6.3 V part there would be over-voltage; read the part on your board and fit at least 16 V.[5][2]
The 32K RAM board, fitted only to the VG-8010, has one electrolytic, C810 (68 µF, c, 6.3 V), on its +5 V supply.[5]
Encoder board
[edit | edit source]| Ref | Value | Voltage | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| C827, C847, C849 | 10 µF | 50 V (parts list) | Sound inputs to the mixer TS355 |
| C862 | 10 µF | 50 V (parts list) | Listed in the parts list |
| C824 | 47 µF | d (10 V) | Sound input from port C bit 7 of the 8255 |
| C826 | 100 µF | d (10 V) | Sound output from TS355 |
| C838 | 150 µF | c (6.3 V) | +5 V to the UHF modulator |
| C864, C865 | 100 µF | d (10 V) | TDA2501 reference supply (zener diodes D352 and D351) |
| C821 | 100 µF | d (10 V) | Chroma output coupling |
| C867 | 150 µF | c (6.3 V) | +5 V input to the board, after L465 |
| C839 | 68 µF | e (16 V) | +12 V input to the board |
| C812 | 10 µF | not legible | Cassette input comparator IC665 |
The /19's RGB encoder board uses the same sound inputs (C824 47 µF; C827, C847 and C849 10 µF; C826 100 µF) and has C587 (1 µF, h, 63 V) on its +12 V input. Its parts list also gives C862 as 10 µF 50 V.[1][7] Read the remaining values from the board.
Which to replace first
[edit | edit source]- C203 in the VU-0022, if the supply shows the symptoms above or is untested. Then the other supply electrolytics.[4]
- The supply filters on the main board (C832 to C837) and on the encoder board (C867, C839).
- The encoder board capacitors if the picture is poor. One owner found that recapping the supply, main board and encoder board made a shaking picture steadier, but the VG-8010's video stays noisier than most MSX machines.[8][9]
- The audio coupling capacitors (C824, C826, C827, C847, C849) if the sound is weak or distorted.
General advice on MSX recapping from the MSX Resource Center forum is to replace the main supply capacitors whatever their condition and to replace one capacitor at a time.[10]
After the recap
[edit | edit source]- With the computer disconnected, check the supply outputs and set R168 for 5 V across C201.[11]
- Connect the computer and check the picture in colour and the sound. On the /00, check the PAL clock (C900) if the colours are wrong.[11]
Remaining faults are covered in the Philips VG-8010 Troubleshooting Guide.
