Philips VG-8020-00 power supply board layout (service manual)
Power supply board layout from page 5 of the VG 8020/00 service manual

Two Philips documents for the Philips VG-8020 are hosted on the wiki: the service manual for the VG 8020/00 and the English pages of the installation manual supplied with the computer.

VG 8020/00 service manual

[edit | edit source]

File:Philips VG-8020-00 Service Manual 4822 727 15228.pdf is Philips's Service Manual, Home computer VG 8020/00, document number 4822 727 15228, printed in the Netherlands and published by Philips Service Consumer Electronics. It has 22 pages, with the specification, warnings and adjustments in English, Dutch, French, German and Italian. The cover refers to a separate Repair method VG8020. The scan was made by Hans Otten in 2001.[1]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • It covers the /00 only. The /19, /20, /29 and /40 use a different main board with the S3527 MSX-Engine, and no service manual for them has been published.[2][3]
  • The electrical parts list is a selection of replaceable parts. It lists only two electrolytic capacitors (C4 and C22, 4.7 µF 25 V); the others appear only on the circuit diagrams.[1]
  • Several values on the power supply diagram are faint on the scan. The NMS 8220 service manual draws a power supply with the same part number more clearly; see Philips VG-8020 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
  • The capacitor voltage code on page 10 omits the letter "e", which the diagrams use. The NMS 8220 manual's key gives e = 16 V.[1][4]
  • The Repair method VG8020 named on the cover is a separate document. The MSX Archive's service manual directory holds repair-method documents for the VG 8235 and the NMS 8250, but none for the VG 8020.[5]

Installation manual

[edit | edit source]

File:Philips VG-8020 Installation Manual.pdf is the English section of the multilingual Philips VG 8020 MSX Computer installation manual, 14 pages, scanned and OCRed by Hans Otten in 2001. The Internet Archive item is titled "Installation Manual (GB)", although the file name there is Spanish.[6]

Contents (printed page numbers)
Pages Contents
1 Contents and introduction
2 and 3 Chapter 1: making the connections (mains, power switch, TV, monitor, data recorder, printer, reset, joysticks)
4 Chapter 2: the cartridge slots
5 to 7 Chapter 3: the keyboard
8 Chapter 4: how to care for your computer
49 to 52 Appendix A: technical specification, memory map, cartridge, data recorder, joystick, monitor and printer connector pinouts
53 Appendix B: the keyboard

[6]

It is a user document: it has no circuit or service information. Its appendix A names the sound chip as a "GI AY-3-8910 or similar chip"; the /00 service manual lists a YM2149.[6][1]

Other documents

[edit | edit source]

The Internet Archive also holds Dutch user manuals for the VG-8020 (items philips-vg-8020-gebruiksaanwijzing and msx-philips-vg-8020-manual-nl-1984) and a multilingual installation manual (philipsvg8020msxcomputer). They are not hosted here.[7]
